Landscape 2 - Nature

Sketch of a park, I've picked this view because it pleases the eye, no important object are sitting in the middle of the drawing, which makes it offer a nice view. There are no cut objects in this drawing, which makes the landscape look complete, ok, and helps it reveal a real atmosphere. I've decided upon single-way hatching , from left to right, due to the fact that the ambient is supposed to be a quiet one, with no major influences upon the eye, so, I tried to keep it normal looking throughout the whole sketch.

Landscape

I've decided upon drawing a street from Bradford, as a landscape, because I though it had good perspective. I've tried to get some details in the drawing, but also I tried to keep it as simple as possible, just because as I started drawing I felt there was something wrong with the perspective in my drawing. I belive the fence looks decent, and the tree staying there in the corner offers more life to the drawing. What I could have done better in the drawing would've been to try and move a bit until I had a better perspective, and also to try to get as many details as possible.

Human Figure

Final result of all the anatomy studies I've made. I think they helped me a lot, especially on how and where to start drawing it. Those studies helped me in learning the human poses, how the body parts should look in a drawing, and how to balance the figure in order o get a realistic pose of the model.

This pose was drawn from a woman who is trying to get up from a chair, right in the middle of the action. This pose was pretty easy to draw due to the fact that it looks almost similar to when the figure is standing straight, and I could get a good sense of balance, just by seeing how the spine helps the body balance itself. I think I got the shades and details on the body to look realistic enough. Had to start slowly, from the shoulders, and going down to the knees in order to get the good look on the pose. Every time I drew a figure, I was thinking about where the axis is located, in order to get a good detail, realistic feeling, and a ok shape on the figure.

Another figure drawing, I think this one was the most challenging to draw due to the complex pose. I've started doing the upper body, with no arms. After I finished with the body, I started with getting an idea of where the legs are going to be, and how I would draw them. I started slowly, drawing straight lines in the shape of a leg, until i got what I was looking for, and gave it at more organic shape after. A mistake I see in the drawing, is the right leg, the one that stays straight. I believe that the line that's connected to the body causes quite some confusion, but I didn't see any other way of doing it. The whole drawing took about 25 minutes to do, and, in my opinion, it has a good shape of a human figure.

For this pose, I figured out how it was going to look from the very moment I've seen the model. Seeing the pose, I noticed that all the weight was on the straight leg, and the bent one was just for posing. Noticing that, I was able to draw a good looking figure, and making it look as real as possible just by trying to add weight distribution on the drawing. Another easy thing to notice was the the spine helped a lot with drawing this figure pose. Took me 10 minutes to finish the sketch.

Human Proportions and Pose - Anatomy Study

Figure drawing, the whole body but doesn't have too much detail in it. I've just tried to set up a pose using an axis, while drawing a whole model using the lines i have on the grid. After I've done the head, I've went to define the shoulders and hips to get some vision of how it should look and pose. I've tried to to this exercise several times in order to start drawing good figures, fast, and efficient. This sketch took approximately 15 minutes to draw.

Composition: Still Life Drawing

Another still life drawing, I started first by setting up the composition, and adding some lights in order to start drawing. The balance of the drawings look ok, I have kept the drawing as simple as I could in order not to distract the viewer from the main objects in the drawing. The objects are not floating, they are grouped together, nothing is orphaned. The shading in the drawing looks good, I've chosen to make a gradient as a background because the table was too white, so I had to balance somehow the lack of grey in the composition. The bowl and the jug are nearly kissing, I've tried to not make them be kissing objects, I think I  have managed to do that alright. The sketch took about 40 minutes to be completed.

What I could have done better: Trying to avoid having the bowl and the jug nearly kissing. Trying to draw better ellipses

Research - Anatomy 2

Another study-drawing, a foot this time, made up from construction lines all the way, from the ankle, to the tip of the toes, in order to determine a good shape, structure, and size. Also added soft shadows, to get an even better look on the foot.

Another research drawing, another foot, this time created only with lines and points, coming from the ankle and going towards the toes. The foot has an ok geometry and shape, and the shadows offer it depth, and a more natural look.

Research - Anatomy

Anatomy Study - Hand

In these three sketches, I wanted to start studying the anatomy of a hand, how it should look, how it can be drawn using lines and circles, in order to make it feel natural.

This hand, at first, had only lines, where the fingers should have been, and after the lines were put in place, I started adding circles, to determine the width of the fingers, and get a rough shape of what it should look like.  Also, the hand has a nice pose, caught in the moment when it should grab something.

Quick sketch in pencil of a hand on a table, created from straight and curved lines to determine the fingers and the position of each finger. The construction lines on the hand were really helpful in revealing every position of each finger, and how it should look. After the rough sketch was done, some detail was added to it, as well as some shadows and contrasts. What I could have done better is to try and get a better perspective for this drawing.

A final hand sketch, result of this research. The construction lines for each finger helped by revealing where each finger should be, although three of them are not shown. In order to get the organic look on this hand,  the lights and shadows were needed to get a good geometry and shape of the whole sketch.
