Research - Anatomy 2

Another study-drawing, a foot this time, made up from construction lines all the way, from the ankle, to the tip of the toes, in order to determine a good shape, structure, and size. Also added soft shadows, to get an even better look on the foot.

Another research drawing, another foot, this time created only with lines and points, coming from the ankle and going towards the toes. The foot has an ok geometry and shape, and the shadows offer it depth, and a more natural look.

Anatomy Study - Hand

In these three sketches, I wanted to start studying the anatomy of a hand, how it should look, how it can be drawn using lines and circles, in order to make it feel natural.

This hand, at first, had only lines, where the fingers should have been, and after the lines were put in place, I started adding circles, to determine the width of the fingers, and get a rough shape of what it should look like.  Also, the hand has a nice pose, caught in the moment when it should grab something.

Quick sketch in pencil of a hand on a table, created from straight and curved lines to determine the fingers and the position of each finger. The construction lines on the hand were really helpful in revealing every position of each finger, and how it should look. After the rough sketch was done, some detail was added to it, as well as some shadows and contrasts. What I could have done better is to try and get a better perspective for this drawing.

A final hand sketch, result of this research. The construction lines for each finger helped by revealing where each finger should be, although three of them are not shown. In order to get the organic look on this hand,  the lights and shadows were needed to get a good geometry and shape of the whole sketch.

Still Life

One still life drawing, of three objects set into three different positions, each of them at a different depth. Shadows are seen on the table and the wall, and an implied line that's starting from left to right, with the bowl, passing beneath the jug and ending on the other side. There are no orphaned objects, everything stays into a group, which is partially set on the rule of thirds, except for the jug which is the main focus and had to stay in the center. The drawing has a good balance between light and shadow, and represets an appropriate composition style of a still-life drawing. Made in pencil, took 25 minutes to be done, started by constructing the structure of the jug from points, lines, and circles, and kept adding to it till a good shape was obtained. I've done some mistakes too, such as the kissing lines from the bowl and the jug, and the fact that I didn't add a surface for the objects to stay on, and stop making them look like they're floating.

The shading of the objects brings out their shape, and the fruits reflections on some of the surfaces shows the type of material in the composition. The contrast between the light and darkness are well determined. Every bowl has different depth, while sitting on the table, and there are no orphaned objects. Also, having lights in the scene, means that there are shadows, as the big bowl creates a shadow on the table and the wall behind it. In the drawing there are some implied lines, created by the reflections, which guide the eye from the right handle of the big bowl, down to the reflections, passing through the apple and going on to the third bowl and passing over.

What I did wrong in this drawing: Setting up the composition in the middle, cutting a bit of the pepper, kissing objects, the top apple with the small fruit bowl from behind. I could have also kept the drawing more clean, without any reflections and backgrounds due to the fact that these might confuse the viewer and attract the attention from the still-life composition.
